Yamaha YTR-8335RS Trumpet

Yamaha YTR-8335RS Trumpet

The stage lights, a hazy gold, caught the sheen of the silver plating. Twenty years of this, give or take. The bass player, bless his heart, coughed. I’d seen it all before. Tonight, though, felt different. This wasn’t just another gig; it was a judgement. My old Stradivarius had finally retired, and this, the Yamaha YTR-8335RS Xeno, was its successor.

This trumpet, with its reverse leadpipe, is a different beast entirely. It felt lighter than my usual horn; a welcome change, actually. The response, that instant communication between the musician and the metal, was almost… instantaneous. The air just flows through it. I felt a little like a kid again, marveling at how smoothly the valves glided – an absolute joy. And the intonation? Spot-on, even up in those precarious high registers. This isn’t just luck; the reverse leadpipe design really helps refine the airflow, making those treacherous intervals less of a gamble.

But, a word to the wise: the silver plating does tarnish. It’s a fact of life, like having to re-cork a wine bottle. Keeping it pristine requires regular polishing – a small price, if you ask me. Especially when you consider what you gain.

Now, the Xeno series has always been solid. But this RS model is a step above. It’s a marked improvement over the older Yamaha models. I played the same arrangement – the fast, flitting runs and that soaring sustained high note – that I’d played for decades, but with more control. And more… feeling.

For the serious professional, especially those who demand a quick response and crystal-clear articulation, this horn is a winner. For those still finding their footing? I’d advise focusing on a good mouthpiece pairing, like a Bach 3C. Get that right, and you’ll unlock the full potential. The reverse leadpipe design, coupled with that sterling silver, creates a horn that’s simply a joy to play.

So, if you’re a gigging musician, looking for that next-level instrument, go ahead. Buy it. You won’t regret it. Just don’t forget that silver polish.
