Pioneer DJ DJM-900NXS2

The condensation hung thick in the air, slicking the brushed aluminum of the CDJs. Vegas. 3 AM. The club was a pressure cooker. I’d heard the murmurs, the hushed whispers about the new “holy grail” mixer: the Pioneer DJ DJM-900NXS2. My curiosity, and a healthy dose of professional skepticism, had brought me here.
Frankly, I wasn’t expecting miracles. Pioneer, bless their hearts, has a history of refinements, not revolutions. But the whispers persisted. The claims: a warmer, more “analog” sound. Hogwash, right? Digital is digital. Except… after hours of relentless pounding, pushing the system, I started to believe.
The secret sauce, as far as I could tell, is the 96 kHz/64-bit digital signal processor with that low-jitter clock. They’re not just throwing buzzwords around. This thing genuinely sounds different. My ears, after years of abuse, can still pick up subtle nuances. The transitions – the fades between tracks – were smoother, less harsh. You can really feel the presence of the music, not just the waveforms. The effect sends, routed through the included sends/returns, were pristine. This is a significant upgrade from the original 900NXS which, while solid, felt a bit… sterile by comparison.
The EQ is a joy to use. The curves are meticulously sculpted. You can carve out frequencies with surgical precision, or paint with broad strokes. This is essential. Every venue, every sound system is different. I particularly appreciated the isolator on the low-end; the kick drums hit with a satisfying thump without clouding the mix.
And the built-in effects? Phenomenal. The Space Echo is particularly good for creating those atmospheric, psychedelic soundscapes. The Beat FX section allows for instant, precise timing control. It makes you feel like a magician. Now, here’s a small gripe: the touch strip above the effect selector sometimes felt a little too sensitive, accidentally triggering a filter sweep. The work-around? Get familiar with the unit, and you’ll soon learn how to adjust your finger placement accordingly. Muscle memory kicks in.
For the seasoned pro, this is a must-have. The serious hobbyist, with an eye on future-proofing, will also appreciate the investment. If you’re looking for a mixer that allows for creative mixing and excellent sound quality, jump in. You won’t regret it.
