Tile Mate (2022)

The faint chime of a lost E string, reverberating faintly from the practice room corner, used to be the soundtrack to my morning despair. Then, the endless scavenger hunt began. Replacing a single string could turn into a twenty-minute ordeal. But the Tile Mate? That, friends, has brought an unexpected peace.
I’ve spent decades wrangling with gear. Amps, cables, pedals… they all have a habit of disappearing. The idea of attaching a Tile Mate to things was initially a head-scratcher. After all, what’s a few lost guitar picks amongst friends? But the promise of sonic peace won out. After a week of use, I’m a convert.
Let’s get technical. This isn’t some fancy Bluetooth transceiver with fancy GPS. The Tile Mate works via short-range Bluetooth. The range is advertised at 250 feet, which I found to be mostly accurate, at least inside the typical brick-and-mortar building. The case, the one referenced in the marketing copy, proved surprisingly rugged, and well, necessary. Dropped it repeatedly, and the little tracker, which had to be placed in a precarious position attached to my violin case, emerged unscathed.
The initial setup felt intuitive. Pair it with your phone via Bluetooth, then use the app to “ring” the Tile, which alerts you to its location and makes a surprisingly loud chirping noise. Easy. Simple. Effective. Consider that this product actually has a 3-year battery life – that’s a serious win in this day and age.
The one minor hiccup? The volume. It’s definitely loud enough for most situations, but in a loud music room, it sometimes gets lost. My quick workaround? Double tap the “find” button in the Tile app. This causes the Tile to cycle through a series of louder chirps, increasing the chance it will be heard, even buried under a Marshall stack.
There are other options, obviously. The Apple AirTag, for example. But, they are locked into the Apple ecosystem. The beauty of the Tile Mate lies in its broader compatibility. I can find my things, regardless of whether I am using an Android or Apple phone.
Here’s the bottom line: If you’re a gigging musician, constantly juggling equipment and running between venues, this is a must-have. The Tile Mate is a small investment for a huge return in time saved and sanity preserved. Buy it. Now. You will thank yourself later.
